In this member spotlight, we're delighted to feature Jessica Lewis. She is the founder and CEO of LáLew Public Relations. The firm has worked with clients whose projects have been featured on the likes of ABC News and Ebony among other media outlets. Recently at the 2023 PRism Awards ceremony, LáLew Public Relations was awarded 4 awards for their outstanding work in the field. Let’s learn more about Jessica in the interview below.

What initially led you into the field of public relations?

I used to work for the Urban-Suburban Transfer Program. There I led communication efforts for the 58 year old program. It is the nation's first desegregation program and I am an alumni. I managed the website, social media channels, and quarterly newsletters. I organized youth summits and facilitated group sessions with participants. Through my employment there I was afforded the opportunity, via a tuition reimbursement program, to enroll in classes at MCC in Communication and Media Studies. I already obtained a bachelor’s and master’s degree years before. However, this opportunity allowed me to get my feet wet in the world of communications. I registered for a PR 101 course. Dresden Engle was the professor. Her class was very lively and interactive. It piqued my interest, I had a natural knack for PR and that was the gateway into my career in public relations.

You founded LáLew Public Relations in 2016. What was your inspiration in starting your own business?

I was inspired by my professor Dresden Engle. I had been doing communications and public relations for a while, just never knew that’s what I was doing. While in college at Buffalo State College, I served as the president of an on-campus club dedicated to addressing pressing issues around social justice. I often found myself engaging in meaningful conversations with my peers and would promote club activities and special events. Years later, those experiences coupled with my professional experiences, would come full circle with the launch of my own public relations company.

When and why did you become a member of PRSA Rochester?

I became a member of PRSA in 2020 during the pandemic. Someone encouraged me to apply for the Rising Star award and I won. It was at that moment I realized I needed to be involved in a community that supported the growth and development of public relations professionals.

What benefits, skills, or education have you received as a member?

I’ve learned so much since being a member and have made wonderful connections with others in the field. I have been able to learn from other companies who have had a long history in Rochester, partner with these businesses on projects and be recognized in four categories at the 2023 PRism awards.

What do you love most about working in PR?

What I love most about working in PR is the satisfaction you get from helping your clients craft a message that tells their story. I love being able to secure earned media placements to spread their message far and wide. I also love preparing the next generation of PR professionals through my company’s internship program.

What does success mean to you?

Success to me means taking your wins with pride and losses with grace. Entrepreneurship is no easy feat. You add that to the ever changing field of public relations and the job itself and you can find yourself in a whirlwind. The good news is that every day is an opportunity to learn and grow. What PRSA does is allow you to remain a student of your craft. I believe that iron sharpens iron. We should never get to a place of complacency. You should always be striving for more.

What is your favorite summertime activity to do in the Rochester area?

I love Rochester festivals. Some of my favorites include the Lilac Festival and Corn Hill Arts Festival.

If you could describe your career/professional life in one word, what would it be?

Greater.
